Program Details
Students must be accepted into the Optical Apprenticeship Program prior to taking OPTN courses. Registration in this course is limited to apprentices accepted into, and registered with, the state of California Department of Apprenticeship Standards. Each apprenticeship has different eligibility and admission requirements but includes being at least 18 years of age and having earned a high school diploma or GED. They design, measure, fit, and adapt lenses and frames for clients according to optical prescription. They also assist clients with inserting, removing, and caring for contact lenses.

Describe the principles of contact lenses, the process of fitting contact lenses, and the various types of contact lenses available. 5. Choose the appropriate ophthalmological tests, tools, and instruments to examine and treat the eye.
- Identify the structures and functions of the eye, accessory organs and visual pathway.
- Recognize conditions, diseases, and disorders that affect the eye and common treatments.
